<div style="text-align: left;">
A news release from Gympie, Australia on Feb 9, 2016 tells the story of Irene Deans, 92 years old, who recently indexed one million names into FamilySearch. org. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Irene is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and stated that indexing, "is what gets her up in the morning and keeps her going." Irene gets up at 5:30 am every morning to sit at her computer and indexes for many hours. She is truly a remarkable example of someone who regularly devotes her time to service to the Lord. She is an inspiration to all.</div>

<span style="font-size: x-large;">Stake Indexers Help Black Community</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Thanks to the promotion of the Freedmen's Bureau Project in the Oklahoma City Black Community, by the Church's Public Relations folks, about 25 Indexers from our Oklahoma City, Oklahoma Stake had a wonderful opportunity to reach out and help people learn how to index.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
On Saturday, February 6, 2016, our group of indexers were invited to attend a 4 hour program at St. John's Missionary Baptist Church on North Kelley. There were approximately 50 people, not of our faith, who attended and they were so enthusiastic and excited about learning how to index and search their family trees. What a wonderful opportunity for all of us indexers to let our lights shine!</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I was set up to help with indexing questions, but the two ladies I had the privilege to work with, Helen and Betty, were more interested in seeing if The Church had any records on their families. The result of this was that not only did I get them set up to index, but I was able to take them into FamilySearch.org so that they could look for those records. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Betty was particularly excited, her eyes lite up and she just couldn't believe that we could find her grandma in the US Census records. What a wonderful experience that was for both of us. While she could not stay long to explore more records that day, she did accept my invitation to come to the Family History Center the next Wednesday morning, when I work, to do more searching. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Sure enough, on Wednesday morning about 10:05 am Betty came to the FHC and I worked with her for 3 1/2 hours, on creating her own family tree and researching records to add as sources. She is so happy and said she would be back next week to do some more. What an interesting background and wonderful stories she had to tell about her family. She is even more excited to be able to start indexing those post Civil War Records from the Freedmen's Bureau Project. I was very touched by the spirit, to be able to help Betty and to learn of her family struggles and life histories. </div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;"><span style="line-height: 18.2px;">You may have heard people talking about the FS Partnership offers to get <b>free accounts</b> with: Ancestry.com, My Heritage, Find My Past or American Ancestors. These are made available to you through your Church membership. This is a fantastic value as some of these subscriptions can cost you $200.00 a year or more. </span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;"><span style="line-height: 18.2px;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;"><span style="line-height: 18.2px;">One of the great values I have just learned about with Ancestry.com is that they offer three features to LDS accounts that are not available to the general, or paid subscription, Ancestry.com users. These are as follows: </span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<ol>
<li><span style="font-family: Georgia, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;"><span style="line-height: 18.2px;">You can either continue any Ancestry.com family tree you may have started as a paid subscription user, or you can import 4 generations from your FS Tree. You don't have to start from scratch.</span></span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Georgia, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;"><span style="line-height: 18.2px;">You can connect any individual in your Ancestry tree with your Family Search tree, and exchange details. Look for the small FS Tree icon on your person's profile page that says "Connect person to FamilySearch".</span></span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Georgia, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;"><span style="line-height: 18.2px;">Submit Names for Temple Ordinances from your person's profile page in Ancestry.com. Look for the FS Tree Icon in Ancestry.com and click "Request" to view ordinance details. You should compare their details and update any changes first.</span></span></li>
</ol>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;"><span style="line-height: 18.2px;">My Heritage contains billions of historical records and is available in 42 languages. They search for records and matching family trees while you sleep. Then they send you an email when they have found matches. My Heritage started in 2008 in Israel and have many European family trees already in their database. If you are looking for your family lines in foreign countries this is a great way to link up with fellow researchers.</span></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;"><span style="line-height: 18.2px;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;"><span style="line-height: 18.2px;">Find My Past deals mainly with records from the United Kingdom back to AD 875. I don't know much about this site.</span></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;"><span style="line-height: 18.2px;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;"><span style="line-height: 18.2px;">American Ancestors is a data base of family trees that deal with 17th century colonial New England through 21st century immigration. It is a product of the New England Historical Genealogical Society.</span></span></div>

<span style="color: red; font-size: x-large;">Showing Gratitude This Holiday Season</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
After reading a holiday message on the Family Search Blog : <a href="https://familysearch.org/blog/en/4-ways-family-show-gratitude-holiday-season/">https://familysearch.org/blog/en/4-ways-family-show-gratitude-holiday-season/</a> I decided that there are many ways we can, and we all need to, step up our work on our family history. Just a brief review of this short article will tell you how. I think that when we look at our family tree and can't find anyone who needs their Temple work done it is because we need to search more records and find more ancestors. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
When your parents or grandparents did the genealogy research they did not have the electronic databases and indexed records to search through. It is so easy these days to find new records, more and more are added each day as indexing speeds forward. So go into "Search Records" in the Familysearch Tree and get the census records that give family members names (1850-1940) and add those cousins to your tree. You will probably add more names that need Temple work.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
You are the beneficiary of this incredible Indexing work,and right here I want to say THANK YOU TO ALL INDEXERS for making it possible to find more and more records in Familysearch tree. Keep up the great work, keep indexing in 2016. But start out the New Year by working on your family tree and adding sources and family photos or stories. Another thing you might do is to share Familysearch Tree with others, show them how to use it.</div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
Now that I am a family history consultant I am willing to share my knowledge of FamilySearch.org with members of my Ward or those who come into the Family History Center when I am working. . Part of this work includes teaching classes in the FHC during the second hour each Sunday, on using FamilySearch. There are many new features and documents to find on FamilySearch and I suggest that each Ward should have on-going family history classes, to help everyone to learn how to use the program.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
OKC 1st Ward is making an effort to help members learn how to find names in their family trees that might need Temple work done. There is a beautiful family tree on our bulletin board in the hallway of the Stake building that displays photos of the First Ward member families and how many names they have completed in 2015, at the Temple. It represents their dedication to Temple and Family History work.</div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
Along with a memorial Veteran's Day, this month brings us lots of changing weather, whirling leaves and that big food day when we celebrate and give thanks for our Pilgrim ancestors;Thanksgiving Day. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Why do we have so much food on the table when our families come home that Thursday to help us celebrate. I feel it is because we, following in the Pilgrim's footsteps, are thankful that we have family and that we have had a year of bountiful blessings, no matter how big or small they have been. We want to gather our family members together to give thanks to the Lord for these blessings.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Some of my warmest memories of Thanksgiving are having all of my sisters (4) bring their families home. We shared some wonderful fellowship and memories as a family, thankful for each other and our parents. Some of us this year may not have that opportunity to be with our family, but we can still be thankful for Heavenly Father and His Son, for watching over us this past year.</div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
Since my release as the Stake Indexing Director in Oklahoma City Stake, I have fallen down on my time that I spend on Indexing. It appears that many others have taken a break also. That is ok, but I plan to re-dedicate more time to this wonderful service to the Lord. I would also like to continue this blog to post some wonderful ideas about Family History work and of course some indexing tips. </div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Some of you may have wondered what was going on with the Freedman's Bureau Project. This is an indexing project which the African American community has been invited to index, through efforts made by the Church Public Relations Committee and Salt Lake City. Indexers who know how to index these records could volunteer to help train the african american community members so they can get started indexing. For more information on this please contact Jan Larsen, Public Relations Director for our Stake.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">This project includes records that were generated after the Civil War and marks the first time that there are documented records of the slaves that were emancipated. </span><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">When the Civil War was over depression and poverty levels were very high in the south, not just for the freed slaves but for many white people too, whose names may appear in these records as well.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">There are different types of records in this project which include employment contracts, food records, marriage and school records, just to name a few. Although we have been asked not to index the records ourselves, we should become familiar with them and how to do the indexing for them. On November 8th there was a open house event at the Stake Center to which over 150 people were invited and several of our Indexers were there to help. I understand that in January there will be a big Indexing event for this specific purpose. When details are available I will let you know when and where.</span></div>

This photograph exemplifies the beauty and serenity of a lazy summer day. Likewise indexing, to me, is an example of the beauty of providing a service to others, to our Lord and to our ancestors. A service that has resulted in over three billion searchable records at FamilySearch that help others find their ancestors. How beautiful is that? How do you feel when you finally find a record on-line that supports your family records? That is only possible because someone took the time to help create a computer searchable index.<br />
<br />
I am so very thankful for all of you who are indexing and arbitrating in our Stake. Your contributions are beyond words of mere thanks!! Keep up the good work and help someone else learn how to index too.<br />

<span style="font-size: x-large;">Writing a Life Sketch in Family Tree</span></div>
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgL0Hro704s3KpqDNMs5s6ggVb_q3ydYdPNZal7L_uCcnhXS6-PDAJe5yUQ6zq-lztB3hk6RH4RIPpZQwvuZdKBBlcHan2K5TGo1-Hs54MptbDi_aV3Nh50LDVK8awOHX9Z4wVW6uSHlJg/s1600/ATT00006.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="230" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgL0Hro704s3KpqDNMs5s6ggVb_q3ydYdPNZal7L_uCcnhXS6-PDAJe5yUQ6zq-lztB3hk6RH4RIPpZQwvuZdKBBlcHan2K5TGo1-Hs54MptbDi_aV3Nh50LDVK8awOHX9Z4wVW6uSHlJg/s320/ATT00006.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Have you consider writing a life sketch for your ancestors in FamilySearch Tree? You might want to view these guidelines before you start and maybe you will find the answer as to why you would even consider doing such a thing. Go to this link to see a one page handout that will be of great help:<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://docs.google.com/file/d/0BzjwCDHaQdS_SGZOb0FDMGl2SW8/edit" target="_blank">https://docs.google.com/file/d/0BzjwCDHaQdS_SGZOb0FDMGl2SW8/edit</a></div>
<br />
Several reasons why I would want to do this are listed below for your evaluation:<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>Life sketches lend stability to the record.</li>
<li>It is a brief, about 1,500 words, thus a sketch - avoid personal pronouns</li>
<li>Include facts that will help other researchers</li>
<li>Calls attention to the problem of other people merging or editing your information</li>
<li>Everyone can see it at the top of the profile</li>
</ul>

<div style="text-align: left;">
Have you ever added someone to your tree by mistake and you don't know how to get them out of your tree? I have and it wasn't funny. It took awhile till I figured out how to delete him or unlink him from the parents. I found a great short video that will show you how to handle situations like this. You may wonder how that affects you, maybe your family roots don't fall into this category, but these records extend to just about anyone who lived or worked in the south in the years following the civil war.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="background-color: white;">It includes anyone who needed help after the Civil War. These records reflect the massive effort of the federal government to assist the newly freed slaves and anyone impacted by the war. They provide a look at the legal system and how it worked, or didn't work in those days.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="background-color: white;">Various records included in this project are: work contracts, marriage records, birth records, school records, wills, food and clothing rationing lists, property settlements, etc.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="background-color: white;"> More importantly for the black community it was the first time that the names of the children and parents were recorded. The first vital records for this community. These records reflect a massive effort to stabilize the south following the Civil War, and you may even find your ancestors listed there.</span></div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: blue;"><b>F</b>rom May 1 - May 8th, worldwide Arbitrators were challenged to arbitrate the most records that they could during that week. While I am not able to find the report about the total names and records arbitrated during that challenge, I do know that our Stake contributed the following number of names that week.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<b style="text-align: center;"><span style="color: red; font-size: x-large;"><br /></span></b></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<b style="text-align: center;"><span style="color: red; font-size: x-large;"> 2696 names arbitrated May 1-8th</span></b></div>

<span style="color: blue;">A Special <b>THANK YOU</b></span><span style="color: blue;"> to all who arbitrated that week. Please keep up the work as the records can not be made available for searching in FamilySearch until they are arbitrated. While this number is low, I know that we have some awesome arbitrators in our Stake and your work is greatly appreciated.</span><br />

<div style="text-align: left;">
While visiting in Utah this week, we had the opportunity to go to the open house of the Payson Temple, on Thursday with our son. We could view three of the five floors and it was very beautiful. The part I liked the most was the huge waiting room for the bride and grooms and their families,who will be waiting for ordinances to be performed. One comment I heard was "This is a wedding temple". There are seven sealing rooms and only three endowment rooms. The Celestial room was outstanding with hand sculptured carpet on the floors.It was a wonderful experience to see the beautiful craftsmanship and details that went into building a House worthy for the Lord.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">In the near future, any names that you have been keeping on your reserve list for Temple work, <u>more than two years</u>, will be automatically unreserved by FamilySearch. This is going to happen because there are "nearly 12 million ordinance reservations on hold" and not being completed. An amazing statistic is that "5% of FamilySearch patrons hold 60% of those reservations". </span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Unreserving inactive temple reservations has become a priority due to the fact that a large number of those ordinances fit that two-year criteria. People that have a large list of reserved names can do something to help ensure that the work is completed in a more timely manner. Here are some suggestions:</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<ol>
<li><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Look at your Temple list and see what might be good candidates for sharing with others. Keep the ones you think you can do. You can see your list by opening FamilySearch and clicking on the tab Temple at the top of the screen. </span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">It is now possible to SHARE with other family members via email. This is a very easy thing to do and it is cardless. Just select and mark the names you want to pass along to someone else and then click the SHARE tab. At that point a window will open and you can select "share with family" or "share with Temple". If you click family you will enter the person's name and email address. The person you send them to will have two weeks to accept these names. If they don't accept them, the names will revert back to your list.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">You can also Share with the Temple so that patrons all over the world can have proxy names.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">You could unreserve the names then reserve them again, taking them off the two-year list.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">You can do nothing and the names on your list, that exceed the two-year limit, will be automatically unreserved and other family members will have a chance to do the work.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">If you do not have a reserved list, then start looking for names of ancestors that might be coming off of others lists.</span></li>
</ol>

<span style="font-size: large;">Six and one-half Million images await arbitration ! </span>Familysearch is promoting a Worldwide Arbitration Event in May. Please consider helping out if you are already an arbitrator or contact me to find out how you can become one. (lgmgilbert2@yahoo.com or 405-367-7159)</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<ol>
<li><b>The Goal</b> is to help more ancestors be found and to reduce the number of images awaiting arbitration by two million or more. This process must be accomplished before all of those indexed records can be released for publication and we can find our ancestors.</li>
<li><b>The start date is May 1, 2015,</b> that is coming up soon.</li>
<li><b>The end date is May 8, 2015</b> - one week</li>
</ol>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b><i>Here are four tips that will help you to get ready for this event:</i></b></div>
<div>
<ol>
<li>Read the Instructions, field helps and project instructions, even if you have read them before. Review, there have been many changes including an abbreviated guide for indexing obituaries.</li>
<li><u style="font-weight: bold;">Record Match! </u> I consider this the most important thing you can do. Make sure indexer A and indexer B are on the same line. Be sure to hit the"finished" key after record matching or your arbitration work will NOT be saved.</li>
<li>Start now, in April, by Indexing a batch from each project you plan to arbitrate.</li>
<li>Arbitrate in your own language, unless you have gotten special training in another language.</li>
</ol>
<div>
Plan to do a first-class job arbitrating. What you are doing is a crucial role in helping others to find these images online. </div>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-large;">Update on New Indexing Program</span></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div>
The new indexing program is coming later this year, here are some of the things you can expect to see: [taken from the FamilySearch Blog page; see Aug 4, 2014 by Katie Gale for more details]<br />
click here: <a href="https://familysearch.org/blog/en/magnifying-volunteers-gifts-progress-report/" target="_blank">FamilySearch Blog</a></div>
<div>
<ul>
<li><b>Single-key indexing of selected projects. </b>This will involve simple projects, like printed or typewritten records. These records are indexed accurately by the majority of indexers so only one person needs to index them, and no one will arbitrate them. Rather than our current system where two people index the same thing. There will be an audit process that can catch major indexing mistakes and if the audit sees a lot of mistakes a peer review or arbitration process will be added.</li>
<li><b>Single-key indexing plus peer review. </b>A single indexer will index and a second indexer will review the completed work. In some projects the second indexer can add corrections to the values, and both entries will be included in the searchable index. As an indexer you will have to index a minimum number of records before you are allowed to review others' work. Familysearch will decided who can do the peer reviews.</li>
<li><b>Single-key indexing by field. </b>This involves fields such as Age or Event Year, which are generally transcribed accurately by most indexers and do not need to be reviewed or arbitrated. The new system will bypass these additional steps and cut down on the number of items that arbitrators need to look at, thus speeding up the process.</li>
<li><b>Single-key indexing by qualified volunteers. </b>More experienced indexers sometimes reach a point where review or arbitration of their work may actually increase errors. Indexers who reach this level of quality will have their work directly routed to publication, bypassing any reviews. Familysearch will determine who these indexers are and will run periodic audits to ensure the quality of their work.</li>
</ul>
<div>
I am sure you will love this new indexing program when it is finally released. For those of you who are Group Administrators, and yes you still are one even with our Stake reorganization, please go into the Beta version and play around with batches so you can see what the changes will be like. Nothing you do in the Beta version is going to be saved or published, it is just a "sandbox", a place to practice. I personally like the peer review, because it enlists the help of other indexers, even though they are not arbitrators. This should reduce the workload of the arbitrators.</div>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<span style="color: red;"><b><span style="font-size: x-large;">Please keep Indexing and Arbitrating, our activity has really fallen off in April. </span><span style="font-size: large;">Be sure to put in your new Ward name in your personal profile, so the new Ward can get credit for your work.</span></b></span></div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
Those "Shaky Leaves" at Ancestry.com or "Hints" at FamilySearch Tree, have you seen them? They are there because Indexing facilities them! That's right, you and I make it possible, by Indexing.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I am attracted to them, they pull me in just like a magnet. Almost everyday that I go onto those sites to look at something I find some more. Right now I have 3956 Shaky leaves in my Ancestry tree, and 859 in my husbands tree! I even see them on notices sent to my email!!! Then my whole day, sometimes, is spent checking out the new record finds and adding them to my trees to document my ancestors life. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
It is fantastic how easy it is to do that. It is even more fantastic that you can do it all from home. Have you signed up for your free subscriptions to Ancestry.com? You should because it is now possible to coordinate both your Ancestry tree and your Familysearch tree. To read about this great option click on the link below.</div>

<span style="color: #cc0000;">Have a wonderful week-end. Please go into your Familysearch Indexing account and change your Ward name to match the Ward that you now attend. I think this is exciting news, that OKC Stake has grown so much we can create two new Wards. I look forward to getting Indexing going in all the Wards. Please do not stop indexing, this is a Celestial Calling, not a Ward calling!!! Happy Easter to all.</span></div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
Thank you to all of you who could attend the Indexing Social last January 29th, 2015, for the recognition of the top Indexers and Arbitrators and the top Youth for the year 2014. There were about 28 members in attendance that night and we had a good time. You may have seen the article and photo in the Stake Winter Newsletter that recently was sent out. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Thank you to everyone for a fantastic kick-off of 2015 Indexing and Arbitration. Looking at the report for February, I see that we have arbitrated more names this month than we indexed. We have never done that. Good work! I am trying to increase the number of Arbitrators in our Stake. Right now we have about 5% Arbitrators out of all those signed up to Index, and I would love to see it jump to 10%. So if you would like to learn about arbitration please contact me or your Ward's Group Administrator.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Dennis Brimhall, the CEO of FamilySearch said at RootsTech 2015, that every name you index means you have changed that persons life forever!!! I have been pondering that statement and it changes the way I think about the time spent indexing. We should also be preparing the names of our ancestors to take to the Temple.</div>

Below you will find the names of those in the OKC Stake who made the Top 5 List for 2014. This is based upon the total number of names you either Indexed or Arbitrated. It is not based upon the total "points" that you earned. All numbers were provided by FamilySearch. These people will be honored at the Stake Indexing Social on Friday night, January 30th at 7PM at the Stake Center. Congratulations to all of you for your hard work and I hope to see even more people indexing in 2015. </div>

<span style="font-size: x-small;">August 4, 2014 by Katie Gale - a summation</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
FamilySearch recently announced that they have one billion images of historical documents available on-line and viewable on FamilySearch.org. Of that amazing number only 22 percent of them are indexed. We still have a lot of work to do, so that we can easily search for these documents. The people at FamilySearch are working hard to make the best use of volunteers' gifts of time and talent. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Most of the advancements are coming in the new indexing program, next year, but there are several things that you may have seen already. Recently I have downloaded batches that are called "Single-key indexing projects". This means that simple projects, like typewritten records, that are indexed accurately by most volunteers, will only be transcribed once, by one indexer and will not be arbitrated. The quality will be monitored closely and if the quality of a project drops, a peer review or arbitration process will be added. You can tell if you have downloaded one of these batches, by reading the message that pops up when the download is completed, just before you start to work on the batch. When I get one of these batches, I take my time and check for typos before I submit it. It appears that your accuracy is the key factor in determining if you are eligible to index these "single Key" batches. </div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: blue; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><b><span style="font-size: large;"> </span>The Indexing goal for our Stake in 2015 is more than a number. While we would like to keep our 2014 goal of 1 Million names, indexed and arbitrated, we are also going to encourage our Stake indexers to prepare Family File names to take to the Temple. Each Ward gets a report from Salt Lake on how many members are doing family file names at the Temple. The percentage is not very high for our Stake. We would like to see an increase in that number as well as in our Indexing results for 2015.</b></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: blue; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><b><br /></b></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: blue; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><b>Last week at the Temple, President Hanson told us that he has been asked by the Temple department to increase the number of "Family Baptism Sessions". It seems that this special time, for families at the baptismal font, has been very successful and Salt Lake would like to see more time given for parents to come with their children and family names. </b></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: blue; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><b> As a result of this, <u>President Hanson is adding 8 more Family Baptism times to our monthly schedule at the Oklahoma City Temple. </u> He said he will add these extra family baptismal sessions, starting in February, early on Friday nights and </b></span><b style="color: blue; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">on Saturday afternoons, every week</b><b style="color: blue; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"> . It has been a long time since I have posted any indexing reports to this blog. I hope that I can now get started back at keeping all of our 735 Stake Indexers updated on the valuable service that they are doing. I would like to thank all of you that have indexed or arbitrated this year. We hope to have an even better year in 2015. There are lots of Obituaries to work on and I will be posting helpful hints on how to decide what the relationship to the deceased should be. Please check back here often to see new hints! Obituaries are very valuable and there are tons of them to do. They contain lots of information and many names, , we need your help!</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br />
FamilySearch is looking for anyone who is an arbitrator, to learn how to arbitrate the obituary project. If you can, please take time to arbitrate an extra obituary this month. After Christmas, in January, we will have a training session for all indexers and arbitrators with specific training in obituaries. Thank you again for all that you do to help with this great Service effort.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;"><b>Obituary Helpful Tips:</b></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
These tips come from mistakes that I see when I arbitrate obituaries. The most common mistake is trying to determine the correct relationship to the deceased. Since you can not determine the gender of an individual by the name, you have to decide if you will need to use a generic relationship term. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
For Example: when do I use Parent verses when do I use Mother or Father?</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<ol>
<li><b>If the obit says:</b> daughter of John and Mary Metzger Smith </li>
</ol>
<b>You would index it as</b>: Relationship = parent for both names;</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Parent = John (given name) Smith ( surname)</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Parent = Mary Metzger (given names) Smith (surname)</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<u>You can not determine the gender from the given names. </u></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<u><br /></u></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
2. <b> If the obit says: </b> daughter of John and Mary<span style="background-color: #fff2cc;"> (Metzger)</span> Smith</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<b> You would index it as: </b>Relationship would be Father, then Mother </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Father = John (given name) Smith (surname)</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
and Mother = Mary (given Name), Metzger Smith ( surnames)</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="text-align: left;">y</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<u>You can determine that Mary is a female by her maiden name in<span style="background-color: #fff2cc;"> Parentheses </span></u></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<u><span style="background-color: #fff2cc;"><br /></span></u></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="background-color: white;">3. If the name of the Deceased (always entered as the #1 name in all obits) is shown to be Ruby Mary Metzger Smith, and you can see the name Metzger with her father's name, ie., John Metzger, then you can use Metzger Smith as the Surname of the Deceased. But, <u>you can only do that</u> if you see that the father's surname matches. You should read the whole obit before you start indexing.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="background-color: white;"> It would look like this:</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="background-color: white;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="background-color: white;">Deceased: Ruby Mary (given Name) Metzger Smith (surname)</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="background-color: white;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="background-color: white;">If the Father's last name is different and does not match that of the deceased, then it would be entered this way:</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="background-color: white;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="background-color: white;">Deceased: Ruby Mary Metzger (given names) Smith (surname)</span></div>
</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: blue; font-size: large;"><i><br /></i></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Indexing is family history. It turns the hearts to the Father's and helps to provide the way for members of The Church Of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints to find their ancestors records and prepare a way to take those names to the Temple.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;"> Indexing increases the work of Salvation. Indexing is a tool to increasing spiritual righteous and to hasten the work. It took 78 years to produce the first (1) Billion searchable records for Family Search. It took 7 year, with indexing, to make the next billion records available. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">The 2014 invitation to you is to submit one name to the Temple, if you are indexing, and to index one batch if you have already submitted that name, this year. This is something that I believe every member of our Stake can do.</span></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<b><br /></b></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
The Roots Tech Conference 2014 was an overwhelming success. We all learned new things about Family History work that we are more than willing to our share with our Stake members. This year there were over 10,000 people in attendance, plus 4,000 youth from Utah coming in Saturday for a full day of classes. The youth were very excited to be there and John Bytheway was the Keynote speaker in the youth session.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Keynote speakers for the Thursday, Friday and Saturday morning sessions included, but not limited to: Dennis Brimhall, who is the President and CEO of FamilySearch; Ree Drummond who writes "The Pioneer Woman" blog; Judy Russell who writes "The Legal Genealogist" blog; Dr. Spence Wells a leading population geneticist for the Genographic Project affiliated with National Geographic; Todd Hansen reporter and host of "The Story Trek" on BYU TV; and Stephanie Nielsen popular blogger and author of the bestselling book, "Heaven is Here". All very exciting and well received speakers. Stephanie Nielsen was the only one who received a standing ovation after her heartfelt story of her long struggle recovering from 80% burns suffered in an airplane crash.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
You may ask what did the keynote speakers have in common with a family history conference? STORIES: they are telling their stories in their blogs, in their lectures and their books. It demonstrated the point that you should start now to record your own story. Stories can be about anything in your life and start at any point along the way of life. Stories are the key factor to welcoming the Spirit of Elijah into your heart. That spirit is what will motivate you and your descendants to want to work on your genealogy.It is now possible to add Stories and Photos, now called "Memories", to your ancestors on your FamilySearch Tree. Think about this, if you don't write your story, who will, and what will they say about you? A story is much more interesting to read than names and charts.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Besides the great Keynote Speakers, there where many classes that I attended on DNA as a tool for genealogy; Writing a family history that will have lasting value; Creating a Valuable Family History Blog; and of course classes on What's new in FamilySearch Tree; Indexing Changes coming our way; Indexing Obituaries, the new Indexing Project in 2014. Saturday was LDS day and Elder Alan F Packer gave a wonderful talk on "Igniting Family History in Your Ward, Quorums, and Groups". It was a very inspirational learning experience for all of us and we are grateful that we were able to attend.</div>

If you were unable to attend the Class I had on Feb 15th at the Stake Center on the changes coming to Indexing in 2014, you can pick up a list of those changes at the Family Search Center in Oklahoma City Stake Center. You may see some minor changes after February 26th, but the rest of the program has not changed. The major changes will be available around August of this year.</div>

<b><i>WORKSHOP ON INDEXING OBITUARIES</i></b></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
There will be an Indexing Workshop on Saturday <b>March 8th in the High Council Room at the OKC Stake Center, from 10:00 am - 12 Noon</b>. Please bring your lap top if you can and you would like to have a hands on experience with OBITUARIES. This new project has may new rules and we will review those rules and try our hand at indexing them. Later this year we will be able to create an Obituary Indexing Group and have our own webpage to communicate with each other and track our progress. This is one of the new features coming to Indexing in August. <span style="font-size: large;">If you are an Arbitrator, please do not try to arbitrate these records unless you have indexed a few batches. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
There is an indexing blog that has lots of negative posts recently about the bad job the arbitrators are doing on the obituary project and I am sure it is because the arbitrator did not try indexing the records and learning the new rules.</div>

<span style="font-size: large;"><u><i>Thoughts about our efforts</i></u></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I am very pleased with the efforts that you all made with Indexing and Arbitrating this year, and I thank you for every name that you indexed or arbitrated. Our Stake goal for 2013 was 2 Million names. Maybe that was too high. As you can see we did not make that goal. As a goal oriented person that was a little disappointing to me. I could have worked at it a little harder but I didn't. Sometimes life gets in the way of our best intentions.<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
We had 311 Stake members who indexed this past year, out of 683 who have signed up to be indexers. I am trying to think of a way to help those who are not indexing become active again. How can we encourage them to want to index again?<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
In a letter from the First Presidency in 2012 it said, "[Church] members are encouraged to participate in indexing, which is <b>Vital </b>to family history and Temple work". Vital can mean essential, or important, but other meanings include Energetic, Vigorous and Vibrant. Vital was an interesting choice of words for the First Presidency to use.<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I can agree that indexing energizes family history work. There are times when I have seen patrons find a record of their ancestor that was only available on the computer because someone had indexed it and then arbitrated it. If watching someone feel that joy of discovery of an ancestor was the only gift we would receive that would be wonderful. But indexing is the "Gift that keeps on giving", and it blesses the lives of those who give the services as indexers and arbitrators by turning their hearts to the family and to the Temple. Once you have a testimony of eternal families and Temple ordinances you are hooked on Indexing. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhShm829Cks9BoqB7N2qIfevHoy8R1JV4sbjjzszM-4oZQUpAgWgJvnojDxj26HPvnf_OdonQA5YJlWD0YJSB-gWWpjGfkBv-HGh6WQIAv8jnJ_SsVI6MJI54Yd1Co8dqYo-eemPTT-6mg/s1600/Moroni+on+Sacrmental+Temple.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhShm829Cks9BoqB7N2qIfevHoy8R1JV4sbjjzszM-4oZQUpAgWgJvnojDxj26HPvnf_OdonQA5YJlWD0YJSB-gWWpjGfkBv-HGh6WQIAv8jnJ_SsVI6MJI54Yd1Co8dqYo-eemPTT-6mg/s1600/Moroni+on+Sacrmental+Temple.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: blue; font-size: x-large;">2014 Stake Indexing Goal</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: blue; font-size: x-large;">1,000,000</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
This year we are setting our goal on 1 Million names. We did it before and we can do it again. I have faith that our Stake is capable of reaching this goal. This year there will also be changes coming about the way we Index. These changes will start sometime in the New Year.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I am going to be attending the RootsTech 2014 Conference in Salt Lake City in February and I will be learning what all of those changes will be. They will be rolled out during the year, not all at once. Starting in February there will be some Indexing Days at the Family History Center for anyone who wants to come and index or receive help. Hopefully this will be a monthly event and all are invited. Dates and times to be posted later.</div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
As you can see, by our statistics, we are falling way behind this year in Indexing in our Stake. I am <u>asking each of you to please try to do 100 names, or more if you like,</u> to help us reach 500,000 names by the end of December. More would be better because out of our 690 registered indexers in the Stake only 66 indexed or arbitrated in October. I know that we have, including me, really dropped the ball on indexing and arbitration this summer for many reasons.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
First of all everything was disrupted and turned up side down by that tornado this spring. Many of you put a lot of time into helping with the recovery and that was greatly appreciated by all. Then the Church put a big push on for all of us to learn about FamilySearch Tree. Adding photos, stories and sources are great features. I have to admit I am working on it almost every day and find it very addicting.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
FamilySearch set up a challenge, with a nice reward, for the person who enters the 12 Millionth Source to Family Tree. We all have to learn how to use the Tree, since NewFamilySearch is going to be a read-only status at the end of this year. With all new programs there is a learning curve. The was also a learning curve in Indexing after we finished the 1940 census records and indexing/arbitration fell off. Now there are many County marriage record projects that are not difficult to work on. I have faith in all of you and I am praying, that with your increased assistance we can do better. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Thank you for all that you do for family history, and remember that indexing is doing your family history. Every name indexed and arbitrated brings an eternal blessing to a researcher or a family member. </div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
This week I woke up with a vivid "dream" that I needed to go into a family group sheet and fix all the birth dates of the children. I had no idea who's family that might be and I was telling my husband how strongly I felt about this kind of message. So I got up, it was just 5:30 am, with the intention that this would be my sewing day, but ended up spending the whole day working on the family group sheet of Peter Seldon Transue, my mother's side of the family.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
It seems that in my <i>MyHeritage</i> program I was looking at some "Record Matches" for Peter the night before, and I decided to see what I had done on his family. Maybe this was the family, I wasn't sure. I discovered that I had only one child listed in Peter's family. That seemed strange, so upon opening another window and looking at my tree in <i>FamilySearch</i> (FS), sure enough, I discovered that someone had added 9 children to Peter's family. The next thing I had to do was <b>prove</b> that these 9 children were really the children of Peter S Transue.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Thanks to "Record Search"<b>, </b>found on the left side of a person's profile page in<i> FS</i> Tree, I easily located several census records that showed 7 of these children. With just a click of my mouse I added those records as SOURCES to my tree and corrected the birth dates. (Amazingly all of the children I had found in the <i>FS</i> tree had the wrong birth dates!!) In the 1910 U.S Census, it was reported that 9 children had been born, but only 7 were living. While I could only prove that 7 of the children belonged to this family the <i>FS</i> program allowed me to prepare 7 more names to take to the Temple. For the remaining children I posted a discussion note about having proof of the birth dates, opening up collaboration with the submitter.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I know that the Spirit of Elijah was speaking to me through my dream. I listened to those promptings, and I also know that Peter S Transue wants his family sealed together forever. I am so glad to be able to do this work and must add here that all of this is possible because of the work you have been doing by indexing and arbitrating. YOU are making these records available to researchers like me. And thankfully, through the efforts of <i>FamilySearch</i> hundreds of thousands of records are added every week. To all, keep up the good work!</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<i>FamilySearch</i> recently entered into a new contract with <i>MyHeritage.com</i> which will give <i>MyHeritage </i>access to over 2 million records now held by <i>FamilySearch</i>. In return <i>MyHeritage</i> is going to give <i>FamilySearch</i> the technology of their very popular "Record Matching" and "Smart Matching" features.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Brother Dennis Brimhall of <i>FamilySearch</i> indicated that while<i> MyHeritage</i> is a paid subscription this new contract will give access to records to people who may have never been able to see them. These records will still be available for free to all users of <i>FamilySearch</i> and we will be seeing more improvements with the search features. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
To me this is a win-win deal. I feel that the Church is preparing for the millennial by giving access to their records to the world, and by speeding up<i> FamilySearch</i> programs. We should keep in mind that some state and local genealogy groups do not make their records available for free and so companies like <i>MyHeritage</i> and <i>Ancestry</i> pay for those records. The Church does not always have that privilege.</div>

<span style="color: magenta; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;"><i>Indexing Suggestions</i></span><br />
<span style="color: magenta; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;"><i><br /></i></span>
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Some of you may be wondering "what can I index?" as there are not many level 1 batches available. Please consider trying a level 3 batch. One that I would suggest is the Oklahoma County Marriages. There are two records on each image and most batches contain an overlay. If you will start by reading the PROJECT INSTRUCTIONS and clicking on the first blue link that says "<u style="color: blue;">click here" </u> you will find some very good examples of how to index an overlay. I have called SLC several times to question them even further about an overlay. You can call for help at this number <span style="font-size: large;">1-866-406-1830 , </span>just ask for indexing help and you will find that they are very kind and helpful. Here are a few things in general that I have learned about overlays in the Oklahoma County Marriage project:</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; text-align: center;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<ol>
<li><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; text-align: center;">Most overlays are parental permission forms or letters.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Index only what you see on the overlay <u>IF the full record underneath appears on another image.</u> If that record does not appear on the next image, then index all information from overlay and from the record underneath as one record.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">The record that appears underneath the overlay will be indexed as a separate</span><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"> record if it is the next image with the overlay flipped back.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">By going to TOOLS, you can mark each image as having two records, if needed.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"> A second photo of the image was normally made with the overlay folded back.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Always look for on the parental consent form, right below the application at the top of the page, for a parents signature. It may not be an overlay.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Marriage dates are on the bottom of the form. If they did not go through with the marriage, use the application date.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">There are 10 images in a batch, most have 20 records in a batch.</span></li>
</ol>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">I am excited to work on this project as I was one of the document preparation volunteers for the Utah Genealogical Society, when they came to the Oklahoma City Court house to microfilm these records </span><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">in 1998</span><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">. Our own Alice Lynn Bodyston of Woodward headed up the project at that time.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>

</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;">How do you get people to return to Indexing after they have been looking at Family Tree and preparing names for the Temple?</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">By teaching them the Gospel Principles of "Turning the Hearts". See D&C 110: 13 & 14. Elder Birmhall, Head of FamilySearch, said that "Every name indexed is an opportunity for Eternal Blessings". Indexing and Temple work is doing Family History. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Our Stake needs to get back to Indexing and Arbitrating, "behold the time has fully come". Did you know there are over 1 million records just waiting for Arbitration before they can be viewed by patrons. We need more Arbitrators. If you are interested please contact me, or your Ward Group Administrator.</span></div>

<span style="color: blue; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><i><br /></i></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Last night the Utah Genealogical Association - Virtual Chapter offered a free Webinar which featured Ron Tanner, a Product Manager for the Family History Department of the Church. Tanner discussed the newest features of FamilySearch Tree and the coming features that look very exciting to me as a contributor to the Tree.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><b>These features include the following:</b></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><u>History List </u>- under People tab, shows the last few persons you viewed and lets you add someone who is "not connected to your tree".</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><u>Ability to select the preferred person</u> to display on your tree such as a second wife instead of the first wife.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><u>Search Records</u> for person you have opened in profile view . It puts in all of their information into the search fields and pulls up all documents available in Family Search. Very nice feature! Then allows you to add them to your source list and attaches them to your person in your tree.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><u>Sorting your sources</u> - there is now a up/down arrow on the right side of each source which allows you to move a source to a new position in the list.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><u>Stories and Photos </u>- I love this feature! You must tag your photos after you add them and they will go onto your assigned person in the tree. You will also see photos that others may have entered for you person. Stories can be written and attached to multiple people in your tree. These stories can be copied by others and edited in their word processor as they write their own stories, but as I understood things, they can not be edited in your tree.</span></li>
</ul>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><b>New Features to be coming soon in FamilySearch Tree are:</b></span></div>
<div>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><u>Printing out a Fan Chart</u> for the person you are viewing and allowing you to move another person in that chart to the #1 position and printing a new chart.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><u>Adding Sources and Notes from New Familysearch to the Familysearch Tree.</u> The new Family Tree will hold up to 15 pages of text in Notes. Always add a source, otherwise it is just hearsay.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><u>Scanning and adding documents as images</u> and attaching them to a source citation, which you have to write, and then attaching them to a person in the tree.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><u>Deleting a person </u>- <u style="background-color: cyan;">you will have to give a reason</u> before deleting a person. If this privilege is abused then you can report the problem and the person responsible for deleting someone in the tree will get a call from the FamilySearch and if it continues they could possibly have their account deleted.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><u>Re-directing </u>all users to FamilySearch Tree by the end of the year. We all must learn how to use the Tree.</span></li>
</ul>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><b>One thing to remember when you are working in the Tree: </b>When you are adding a new person, if you click on "FIND" you are only searching your tree. You should click on "SEARCH" as that will search all trees, and you never know if someone else may have already added your person. Avoiding duplication is a key thing. Always look for duplicates.</span></div>
</div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">I just love the new tree. Many people who are use to using New FamilySearch may find it complicated, but like any new upgrade to a computer program, you will find that once you learn how to use it you will see that it is much better and in this case more collaborative. Be sure and check your profile and allow users to see your email address so they can contact you, but not your other personal info. Come to the library and let the Consultants show you how to use the Tree for an exciting experience.</span></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-small;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Last Sunday, September 15th, all the Family History Consultants, High Priest Group leaders, High Councilmen, and anyone interested in Family History work were invited to attend the Regional meeting, and the place was packed. Brother Abram who is the Area Family History Advisor was there, as well as Brent Summerhays from FamilySearch. Brother Summerhays is the Area Manager for the Church in the North America Southwest area. Summerhays was the main speaker and his presentation was very interesting and uplifting. He was followed by the Oklahoma City, Oklahoma Temple President, Don Hanson.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Brother Abram's said that they hope we would all come away from this meeting more determined to be involved in family history. He quoted D&C 110, Vs 13; "Behold the time has fully come..." and said that was a very historic time and that the time has fully come for us all to do the sacred work spoken of in that chapter. He said " Just imagine when you get to the other side of the veil that our ancestors will either greet us with arms thrown around our necks and with tears of thanksgiving, or with looks of disappointment because we gave up and did not do their work."</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Brother Summerhays talked about the purpose of the meeting, which was <u>" Members with Temple Recommends and Family History responsibilities are now invited to become ambassadors for change in the work of Salvation."</u> The work of the Lord is hastening, we need to do this work, it is our responsibility.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
He presented a very nice power point program and video presentations to support the changes in Family History and the new direction it is going. But, he said first we need to turn the hearts of the people we help, let them learn the stories of their ancestors, then produce the charts. Some of the recent changes in FamilySearch that he briefly talked about are listed below. To learn more about how to use the new features come to the Family Search Center and talk with one of the trained Family History Consultants. They will show you how to get into your Tree and add names or Photos or Stories.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<ul>
<li>Include Photos and Stories of you Ancestors. It is easy and fun. They will be preserved in your tree.</li>
<li>Family Tree display - easier to move around and see who needs Temple work completed</li>
<li>Interactive Fan Chart - you can change the person in the #1 position and see what lines need more work</li>
<li>Beginner Help - Five new excellent videos and instructions to get started. A resource Guide for the Tree, in PDF format</li>
<li>Turning Hearts without Technology - a new booklet called <b>" My Family, stories that bring us together"</b> which is free if ordered through LDS.Org and will be passed on to the youth as well as those who lack computer skills.</li>
<li>Calling Youth to be Family History Consultants (FHC's)</li>
<li>High Priest Group Leaders deciding whose members home the team of FHC's should go to and help with their family history. This unifies families and brings them to the Temple to do the work for their ancestors.</li>
<li>Use of the Member's Guide to Temple and Family History Work be used in Ward Council meetings.</li>
<li>High Priest Group Leaders should meet regularly with each Family History Consultant in Ward.</li>
<li>All of the largest Regional Family Search Centers are, eventually, going to be transformed into Family Discovery Centers. [Read earlier blog to see what they will include]</li>
</ul>
<div>
All of these things are pointing toward Family History being done at home, on your own computer or with help from a friend with a computer. The youth are feeling the change in their hearts and are embracing family history work.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
President Hanson of the Oklahoma City, Oklahoma Temple said that in eight years we will have 200 Temple, and with the infrastructure in place to hasten the work, that we really need the conversion of the hearts of the members. He stated that only 3% of the Church membership have ever turned in their four generation charts. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
President Henry B Eyring said that we need to rise to our call. That your calling as a family history consultant [and Indexers or Arbitrators] has eternal consequences and that we do not work alone, the Lord is with us. </div>
<div>
All of these things are happening because we have a terrific force of Indexers and Arbitrators who are helping move this work along. Thank you to everyone involved in Family History work in our Stake. We are doing a great job with eternal consequences and blessings.</div>

<span style="color: blue; font-size: large;">New FamilySearch/Ancestry.com Agreement</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: blue; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
Today as I was enjoying the sound of thunder and rain in the background my attention was drawn to some recent posts on the FamilySearch blog page, The Ancestry Insider blog and on my favorite blog, Genealogy's Star.<br />
A new announcement from FamilySearch recently talked about a new agreement they have made with Ancestry.com. It appears that Ancestry.com, which is a for profit genealogy company, has offered to put up over $60 million dollars over the next five years to help Familysearch bring on-line approximately 1 billion global historical records that have never been seen. You can read about the new agreement at the FamilySearch blog or on Ancestry.com .Why would they do that? For several reasons, that I can discern.<br />
<br />
It costs a lot of money to prepare the digitized images for Indexing and Arbitration at FamilySearch. Also in the past many records have been shared with Ancestry so that they can be accessible to a bigger, worldwide, market place. Does that mean that those of us who are indexing for FamilySearch will have to pay to now see what we have done? NO. The records will still be available for FREE.<br />
<br />
All historical records that are indexed and arbitrated are available to anyone for free on FamilySearch.org just has they have been in the past. They are also free on Ancestry.com if you come to a Family Search Center and use the on-line portal. Tim Sullivan of Ancestry.com said "the two will share international sets of records more collaboratively...... A significant part of our vision for family history is helping provide a rich, and engaging experience on a global scale." FamilySearch officials said " We look forward to more exciting developments as we continue to work with leading organizations in the genealogy community."<br />
<br />
My thoughts are that I will still continue to index and arbitrate records because I love to help people experience the joy of finding their ancestors. Volunteer indexers play a vital role in genealogy research. Our help will be needed for many more years. Even a small donation of time and talents will make a big difference for an unknown researcher. We all benefit from our indexing efforts, in more ways than one. It is good therapy for cold rainy days or nights when you can't sleep.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: red; font-size: x-large;">Our Ancestors are Waiting</span></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEioSFM0RvH9YAWB-K9GRD4YfijTsHR-l6IwwoYk8-C3HgL_dpE6pVxTK7iJNOMrqs_SPleoUhav-NlY59QhtTBFhAibUv927-u0NvLXgFKdbgyf84xqS8n2hzYdKf3unzkiFXnusBDsmLo/s1600/2008-09-08-0008-24_edited.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEioSFM0RvH9YAWB-K9GRD4YfijTsHR-l6IwwoYk8-C3HgL_dpE6pVxTK7iJNOMrqs_SPleoUhav-NlY59QhtTBFhAibUv927-u0NvLXgFKdbgyf84xqS8n2hzYdKf3unzkiFXnusBDsmLo/s320/2008-09-08-0008-24_edited.jpg" width="189" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<span style="font-size: xx-small;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: xx-small;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: xx-small;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
If you are researching for the records of your ancestors you may find that you come up empty-handed. Don't be discouraged as all records are not on-line. You may have to visit the county that they lived in to find their records. But that can all change if we index and arbitrate the images that we can get. Your dedication to the work may provide the records that can lead researchers to their ancestors.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
As you know each batch is indexed by two people. If they both agree then no more work needs to be done and they can be published. If they do not agree than a third person will compare the two batches and fix the differences. This is called arbitration. Most arbitrators have indexed at least 2000 names and have at least a 95% - 97% arbitration rate.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
As reported by Jennifer Anderson, in the FamilySearch Indexing Newsletter, "FamilySearch Indexing is behind in arbitration by nearly four million images. That represents some 10 million individuals who names cannot be published." If you are currently an arbitrator, thank you and keep up the good work. If you have not been arbitrating for awhile, then there is a new arbitration tutorial that helps you review the instructions. Just click on Help, next time you log into indexing, and look for the New Arbitrators video.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
If you would like to become an arbitrator please contact your Stake Indexing Director or the Ward Indexing Group Administrator. Arbitration is a very vital part of the Indexing Program.Training is available.</div>

Hopefully you have seen this poster in one of our Stake Buildings that honors the 5 Top Youth Indexers. If you haven't please look for them in the foyer and take a minute or two to read the youth's bio's. They are a wonderful group of youth who worked very hard to earn that distinction last year. We are proud of all of the Stake Youth Indexers and may they all realize the tremendous work that they are doing when they index each name. Thank you Toni for taking the time and your talents to make these beautiful posters.</div>
